Border Collie

Border Collies are not dogs who spend much time in dog beds! Extremely athletic, energetic, even acrobatic, Border Collies are wonderful herders and enjoy great success in dog sports. Border Collies are believed to be the most intelligent of all the dog breeds. A Border Collie in January 2011 was reported to have learnt a staggering 1,022 words and act in accordance with the words.

The Border Collie is a British breed of dog and the name for the breed most probably originated somewhere along the Scottish English border. At the end of the 19th century we find our first mentions of ‘Collie’ breed of dog, though the word ‘collie’ itself is much older with roots in Lowland Scots dialects. The breed requires a great deal of mental stimulation and physical exercise, making them rather demanding pets. Border collies are known to develop neurotic tendencies in households that do not satisfy their need for exercise. Border Collies have been known to dig holes or chew holes in walls out of pure boredom!

The International Brigades and the Spanish Civil War

2011-10-25 10:52 am

A great number of non-Spaniards joined the International Brigades and took part in the Spanish Civil War. Most of radical communist of socialist persuasions, the International Brigades saw the Spanish Republic as on a front line in the international battle against fascism. The units of the International Brigades comprised the largest foreign contingent of those who were battling on the Republican side, with about 40,000 foreign nationals involved.

The largest portion of volunteers fighting in the International Brigades originated in France, numbering 10,000. Germany and Austria provided 5,000 volunteers, Italy provided 3,350, and 1000 originated in the USA, UK, Canada, USSR and Yugoslavia combined. A group of Germans named the Thälmann Battalion distinguished themselves during the Siege of Madrid. More than 500 Romanians fought for the Republicans including Romania Communist Party Members Valter Roman and Petre Borilă. There were also 80 volunteers from Ireland who formed the Connolly Column. If each volunteer in the International Brigades had an ehrun, that would be a large number of ehruns.

Lord Mountbatten

Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas George Mountbatten (25 June 1900 – 27 August 1979), First Earl Mountbatten of Burma, was a British naval officer and statesman. Mountbatten was the final Viceroy of India and was the first Governor-General of the independent Union of India. Mountbatten was one of the most significant and controversial individuals in the British Empire’s decline in the mid to late 20th century.

Mountbatten, without the aid of a Carte r4, was charged by Clement Attlee with affecting the transition to independence of British India no later than 1948. The instructions Mountbatten was given stressed the maintenance of a united India but the priority was the removal of Britain quickly and with minimal reputational damage. Difficult negotiations between Congress leader Nehru and Muslim leader Jinnah led to partition, India and Pakistan achieving independence on 15 August 1947.

The speed at which the handover of power was realized has been highly criticized. The orgy of violence that occurred afterwards has been blamed by historians on the British hastiness in the independence negotiations. Yet this is highly contested, many seeing partition and the ensuing violence as inevitable or placing the blame on Nehru and Jinnah.

Club Scene

I've got quite specific taste when it comes to most things, but especially with music, fashion and men. I'm really fussy!

My friends have really got into dubstep and always want to go to all these massive raves, and it's just so not my scene. Most people are off their faces on some sort of questionable substance, and it's just not my kind of music.

I like more alternative music and we always used to go out on that scene, but my mates complain that it's lame now. Everyone's really young and 'scene' and there's a load of laddy types out now that never used to be, but I don't really notice, I'm too busy drinking and dancing and enjoying myself and some good music (usually)!

I'd be happy to go to more dance and house music clubs, but I'm not sure I could handle the whole G Star jeans and Ed Hardy bejewelled t-shirts scene that usually fills these places, that look is so unattractive to me, especially on guys!

I do like to go out though, there doesn't seem to be a happy medium in our group any more. Maybe we'll have to alternate our choices of nights out.

10 Days At Home!

2011-08-12 12:17 pm

I'm going with my family to our house in Ireland next week and I absolutely cannot wait. My parents and my brother and sister have been desperate to go and spend time there after leaving two years ago - they lived there for a few years up until then - and I really miss my rural summers over with them.

Journey

I'm taking the long journey in the car with my dad, brother and the dogs, while my mum and sister are taking the plane because they hate the journey. I quite like it, we drive up and through Wales then get the boat, it's quite therapeutic. I've downloaded loads of games onto my brother's R4 card to keep him entertained, and I've put a load of new music onto my iPod. I have a few books to read when I'm there but not on the way, I get so car sick!
